• I'm planning to buy a new set-up, and im not going to do SLI nor Crossfire, so i decided to stick on a single PCI-E motherboard.
    Heres my 1st option
Mobo: MSI P45 Neo 3 FR
    Intel E8400 (dual Core 3.0GHz)

    2nd option is
    Mobo: ASUS M3N78 VM
    AMD Phenom 9950 2.6GHz Quad.

the rest of the specs will be the same for both.
    Geforce9800GTX
    4 Geil GB RAM
    320 HD
    HEC Winpower 550 PSU
Gigabyte G-Power 2 Pro CPU fan
    Gigabyte Poseidon Casing.

Which would perform better in games? Dual core 3.0GHz or Quad 2.6GHz?

  • Better is relative.

If by better you mean higher performance, then the E8400 is the best bet. The 8400 is a better chip and will perform better in games. Although honestly, I might look at a better chipset other than MSI even though they can make some decent boards. Asus is better and nVidia chipset is it for playing games.

If by better you mean bang for the buck, then the Phenom is the best bet.

The 9800 GTX is a good card, the rest is ancillary.

Also you might want to check the power requirements for the GPU just to be safe. The system might require more than a 550W PSU.

  • Probably the Asus/Phenom will be the better choice given the two, but if you can, find an Asus motherboard and pair it with an Intel Q6600. That'd be the best route, in my opinion.

  • Mobo: ASUS M3N78 VM
    AMD Phenom 9950 2.6GHz Quad.

    3.0ghz for games
