• Hello,
what's the best configuration (hardware / software) to get a +5million vb3 board / 1000-1500 users online, search function working?

Current server config is 3 dual servers xeon-scsi: 1 www (2gb ram), 1 static content (2gb ram) and 1 mysql (4gb ram).

Load is not so bad, but when there are multiple search procs running everything hangs and search must be disabled.

Everything is updated and optimized, only problem is search function (mysql).

    Some solutions or suggestions?

  • My systems are fully optimized. Any changes on my.cnf, httpd.conf, systcl, kernel... on a fully optimized and tested system will not fix it.

This seems to be a common problem for all semi-large and large boards. I was asking for best software/hardware configuration to get search working.

  • Still no solution for this problem from official support?

  • Check this thread out:

    It's a known issue.

  • Read the Sticky thread at the top of this forum and provide the requested info.

  • I know the VB guys don't usually give dates for upcoming release (3.1) but I wish we could get a LITTLE idea anyways, meaning are we talking weeks, couple months, more than a couple months? I am very tempted to install the full text search hack but don't want to waste my efforts if the 3.1 release (supposed to introduce full text search) is coming sooner than later.

  • Sorry but I do not have that level of server knowledge. Maybe eva2000 will, but he likes to look at the specific server details.

well we need your info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 first to see if there's any other improvements

search problems can be partially tuned to an extent via the tweaks i suggest after looking at info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117

but the real problem is with mysql table locking.... throwing beefier hardware at it seems to help for a while until you grow even larger

some folks have had some success in converting some vB tables to innodb but you'd need the disk space and ram to support this as well.

best to start with info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 so i know how your forum/server are fairing statistically

  • Steve: site is fully optimized in all aspects, only problem is search, I think servers capacity / number of posts is reaching current vb3/mysql working schema and need other more expandable or scalable way to work.

This problem is the same in all large vb3 boards.

Erwin: Thanks, Im considering options available on that thread to find the best solution to make search work on semilarge-large boards.
