• I posted this in the Million Post vB thread, but i have a feeling this forums is better...

    Hi, I run a vB board that has 850,000+ posts and 28,259 registered users.
    Peak users online is low 400s with mid 350s as fairly common.

    My server is a 3.06ghz dual Xeon with 1GB ram and an IDE hard drive.

    I get a lot of these general error messages:
    Database error in vBulletin :

    Link-ID == false, connect failed
    mysql error:

    mysql error number: 0
    About once or twice a day, mySQL will get really slow for about 5 minutes or so.

    My guess is that my hard drive is having trouble keeping up.
    I can get a new server with 2x36GB SCSI drives (Seagate 10,000RPM) and a RAID card, but it will cost me about 50% more per month (I also get double my current bandwidth included in the cost).

    Anyway, my question is: Do you think the new drives will help performance significantly and, if so, do you recommend a RAID 0 configuration?

    Thanks!

  • Locate your my.cnf file and edit it.... you should have a line somewhere that looks like [mysqld]
    max_connections = 500

    Your max_connections variable is either not set or set too low. a connect failed isn't a sign of being overloaded, signs of being overloaded are slow load times :)

    Ok...it was set at 350 and we bumped it to 550....

    while faster scsi drives are better, an unoptimised server configuration is more likely cause of failed connect messages

    post info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 and we can see what's going on
    Will do...thanks.

  • SCSI drives make a difference - faster and has its own processor so less server load.
