• hi folks, i just did an upgrade & all works really well except when i go to watch an avi file via the pc/network.
    it displays "caching subtitles" & hangs for ages, it seems as if it's trying to cache the whole film??
    it's fine with .mpg etc & fine with .avi's from disk or hdd, it worked great before i did the upgrade i guess it's a setting somewhere but if so i can't find the sod, any idea's???

    i've just tried to delete the xbmc dir & reinstall my prev version & found i have the same problem with my old version now!!!
    tried assorted avi files though & i have found some run fine but some that did run fine before still seem to keep on trying to cache the whole film to the xbox, is it searching the film for subtitles??


  • enable debugging by holding x+y while xbmc loads. you know it worked if you see a freemem counter in the corner of the screen. play the video... let it hang for a bit... post the log here for analysis.


  • ah so it just grabs a random .rar file?
    wierd, but i'll give it a try i'm getting pretty good at adding & removing xbmc :d
    i'll try a separate dir for movies only & see how it goes,

  • files with rarred subs are a known issue. if this is not the case, we need full debug logs.


  • thanks for that, i've done more testing with assorted file types & i seem to have this problem with more than just avi files, it just seems to be random video types but only thru the network??

    as requested i put it into debug mode & rather than post the whole thing as it's a huge file i wondered if this was the offending bit???

    it goes on for miles then loading the cache etc before eventually playing the file, but is it the "auto open subtitles" bit?

    if so how do i switch it off? i never use subtitles anyway??

  • well i couldn't suss it out at all, so went back to a version from august '05 & all is well again, dunno what the problem was but at least it's playing all movie files again 100%

  • just wanted to chime in. i had the same problem with any build in the last 2 weeks. before that i've never had this issue.

    it only happens in directories where there's things other than just movies, my guess is it's the one i have with rar and zip files. if i have a directory with hundreds of only mpg/avi it doesn't happen at all.


  • thanks for the reply kraqh3d, no none of the files have subtitle files with them, that's why i'm puzzled why it keeps searching for them, i don't think it could be my network as all played fine before the upgrade & some still play fine, it's just seems to be random vid's of varying types not just avi as i first thought. its worked great & played 99% of all files over the same network set up for 18 months or so, so i'm sure it must be a setting somewhere?

    if you've any more suggestions i'd be greatfull, i've really hit a brick wall here,

  • do you have a subtitle file matching the "banned commercials paris hilton carls jr burger ad extended directors cut" filename? there should be more saying "stating" for various files.

    and it always caches like that, regardless of if theres a subtitle or not. notice how it says 0 bytes several times in a row? with nothing else to go by, i would say the problem is your network or your server are slow.

    nope that file was in a directory on my pc to run my gps how the hell it got to my xbox i have no idea, it wouldn't run on anything 'cept windows?? i've deleted it from my xbox to try to help, is the z-drive a swap file? in fact as it's been a while so i've reformatted the xbox & started with a clean install, still the same error with xbmc tho unless i revert back to the old version?

  • i noticed the same problem. whenever a .rar file is in the same directory as the movie file, it keeps hanging at "caching subtitles". if you delete all rar files in that directory, it just starts as it should be. it does'nt matter what file format the movie is.

    i'm using t3ch's 06-1-11 build, latest ccxgui and windows shares.


  • just ran into this myself. i'm now using my windows box with the dvd shared because xbmc keeps spitting my movies out at certain points (but that's another issue).

    the avis play fine if they don't have a subtitle file and hang on caching the subtitle if it is present.


  • ok, the problem is that the .rar file is being opened when it shouldn't be. i don't know why this is as yet, and i'll take a look into it.

  • sorry mate i would've posted the full log, but like i said it was yards long, loads of those zero byte lines, i tried a few versions from december, t3ch, clean & zombie all with same problem, switched back to august all perfect.


    incidentally, none of the file types i tried to play had any subtitles with them, although it said it was caching subtitles??

    also re network speed, when i checked the throughput it was running at 1.3mps so network speed is cool.

    notice the "tomtom" file in my z dir??? that shouldn't be there though it is in my shareaza dir????
