• Tell me the truth!! I want to get a tattoo, but I'm seriously scared!! I know exactly how they are done, and I've seen plenty of artists tattoo people. I guess I'm just a chicken?? I want one on my hip, lower back, outer ankle and the back of my neck (in my hairline). They are all going to be small except for the one on my lower back ( that one won't be very big either). Does anyone have a tattoo in these places? Where do you have your tattoo and how bad did it hurt?

  • Mine were about five to ten minutes each and by the time I started yelling out in pain, they were done.

  • i will NEVER do it again...it hurt so freakin bad...but i'll admit i am a wimp...i got it next to my hip bone on my stomach...it was very painful...good luck!!!

  • I've always likened it to a dentists drill the noise it makes is more painful mentally than what it actually is.i have several did they hurt no irritating but painful no I'm not going to tell you you won't feel anything because you do and I'm sure the artists will accommodate you if they hit an extra sensitive area.i have a dragon that goes from my elbow to my wrist the only time there was more sensitivity was when it was by my wrist as there is less body fat in these areas so your closer to the underlying nerves.and I've just recently got both my nipples pierced and let me tell you that felt real special more than all the tats put together put only for a minute or so

  • I have one one my left shoulder blade. It honestly didn't hurt as bad as I thought. I'm not saying that it didn't hurt though. The outline hurt the most. It felt like a lot of pinches on your skin. It gets irritating after a while. But its worth it!!!!!!!!!

  • Think about this tattoo thing very carefully. Remember that the clarity of tattoos changes over time as your skin cells replace themselves. The tattoo begins to blur after 5 years, and by the time it's 15 years old, it can look like an ugly smear or bruise that isn't recognizable. 30 year old tattoos are the worst looking. The look like nothing more than big bruises. Think it over kiddo. They're hard if not impossible to get rid of, and if you meet the guy of your dreams, but it turns out he hates tattoos, then you are going to be one sorry missy when he dumps you for a lady who doesn't have tattoos. Not all guys like them, and not all guys respect girls who have them.

  • I have a tattoo on my lower back and it really didn't hurt (I am the biggest wimp known to man)...it kinda tickled...I have heard that tattoos in places closer to the bone hurt. I would suggest going for on in the fattier areas of the body first, for example your hips.

  • I just got my first one in March right above my hip bone on my right side. I'm not going to lie it hurt. It felt like a bee sting electric shock kind of thing. You can't help but tense up when you feel it. The good thing is he or she will tattoo you then pause and dip into the ink, tattoo you, pause, dip. So you get mini breaks in between. I felt a little dizzy after 45 minutes but i was fine. It was the best feeling in the world when he was done. I was "buzzing" from the fact i got through it and i love the tattoo. It took an hour and a half. I was so nervous but i wanted it so bad i was like screw it it can't be that bad. My tattoo artist said when he was done, "You know, you did pick one of the most sensitive places to get one." When he got closer to my ribs and hip bone it hurt the most. Bring someone with you and make sure they autoclave there equipment, and keep your tat clean, you will love it when it's over.

  • i don't have any YET but soon i hope i want a butterfly and a star!

  • I have one on my lower back, and one just below my tummy. To me, the pain was like a hot knife cutting into me, but eventually it went numb after 20mins and it was okay. It really depends where you get the tattoo done for the amount of pain you'll go through. The bony areas will hurt more.

  • Honestly, it doesn't matter where you get it you are going to be stuck with needles and I have 12 tattoos and the definitely hurt. Good thing is, it doesn't take that long if you go to a professional.

  • Yes....I think they hurt. I have one on my ankle, one on my forearm, one on the back of my neck and one on the top of my foot. The back of the neck and the top of my foot hurt the most. I was always scared to get them done, too....but it's worth it if it's something you have really thought through and really want! Wish you the best :)

  • I have THREE tattoos:

    1. Purple rose on my right shoulder (I was 14)
    2. Vine around my left wrist (18)
    3. Dragon wrapped around my ankle bone (21)

NOW - the rose didn't hurt much the first time I had it done, but I had it re-touched recently and it was pretty damn uncomfortable.

The vine was EXTREMELY painful - it only took about 30 minutes though (Thank God for that!).

The dragon was by far the most painful of them all. It's colored freehand (not by a stencil) and it took an hour and a half to complete. It was pretty much awful the whole time. My toes kept twitching when he was working on the area underneath my ankle bone.

Having said all this, I would definitely have them all done again. I'm getting another small one next year on my upper arm (if I ever make it was a writer, I'm getting the Virgo symbol behind my right ear - I do office work now though!).

I STRONGLY suggest that whatever you get, make sure it's in a place that you can cover easily. The one on my wrist is annoying because I have a wear a thick banded watch to conceal it for work/interviews.

Make sure that you are 100% positive of what you've chosen because it's awful to have them removed. Go to a reputable artist and make sure that they use NEW needles (watch them take it out of the pack). You can easily get HEP or worse, HIV, from unclean tattoos parlors.

Hope this helped ! :) Good luck with whatever you decide.

P.S. I do not condone tattoos on underage kids (it seemed like a good idea when I had it done - luckily I haven't regreted it).

  • It did- but I liked it. That's just me, though.

  • Your tatoo will hurt a lot more later when you'll try to remove it cause you changed your mind on tatoos.
They are just messages for people out there to read what there is inside yourself...suggestion:keep your ideas secret, do not give them away with a tatoo... tatoo your hart, nobody will see that ecept for those you choose to let in...and it will not hurt phisically either

    good luck

  • I have one on my upper outside arm. That one HURT like hell!!! I have 6 more on my back. The ones that hurt the least are the one nearest my neck, and the one in the upper middle of my back near the spine. The ones that hurt the worst are the ones nearest the armpit/side area. I wont lie, it hurts!!! But its so addicting.

  • My husband and I both have tattoos. He's gotten at least one a year since we met 10 years ago. I got my first 4 years ago and my second 2 years ago. When I got my first one on my lower back the artist we went to (who has done at lease 6 of my husbands) was 'kind enough' to hit me with the gun BEFORE he added ink so I could see if I would be able to tolerate it. I was ok and survived. I'll be Honest with you ...it will be uncomfortable but after a while you just don't feel it anymore because you go numb. The thing to remember is that the pain WILL STOP as soon as the artist stops. Once it's over it may feel a little like a bruise for a day or so but it does go away. True ... tattoos on certain parts of your body WILL hurt more than others.

I will give you a bit of advice though ...
1.MAKE SURE YOU ARE GETTING A TAT OF SOMETHING YOU REALLY WANT ! A lot of the business is coverups of first tattoos because the person said "oh that's so cute" at the time and a year later says what the hell was I thinking.

2.if the tat is very small, over the years it may start to blend and you will not be able to see detail anymore, so make sure that if the tat is important enough for you to get that it will remain with you in its original beauty for a long time.

Good Luck and be sure it is important and special enough to you to decorate and grace your body with.

    PS they really are addicting
